The Certified Software Tester (CSTE) certification is intended to establish standards for initial qualification and provide direction for the testing function through an aggressive educational program. Acquiring the designation of Certified Software Tester (CSTE) indicates a professional level of competence in the principles and practices of quality control in the IT profession. CSTEs become members of a recognized professional group and receive recognition of their competence by business and professional associates, potentially more rapid career advancement, and greater acceptance in the role as advisor to management.

To become certified as a Certified Software Tester, every candidate must:
  1. Satisfy all applicant Prerequisites.
  2. Subscribe to the Code of Ethics.
  3. Pass a comprehensive Examination.

Checking Prerequisites

To qualify for candidacy, each applicant must meet one of four prerequisites:

  1. A 4 year degree from an accredited college-level institution and 2 years experience in the Information Technology field
  2. A 3 year degree from an accredited college-level institution and 3 years experience in the Information Technology field
  3. A 2 year degree from an accredited college-level institution and 4 years experience in the Information Technology field
  4. Six years experience in the Information Technology field

    AND

Have worked in the information services field within the prior 18 months

No formal proof of education or employment are required at the time of application; however the candidate may later be required to provide detailed documentation supporting the option selected depending upon a compliance sample selected according to program criteria. If selected for verification, such verification must be supplied to the program prior to sitting for any necessary examinations.


Filing the Initial Application

A completed Certification Candidacy Application must be submitted through the Customer Portal for entrance to Software Certifications as a candidate for any particular certification. This application is intended to be used by working professionals who feel they are prepared to sit for, and pass, the required examination for the certification designation for which they are requesting candidacy.

The initial application fee is $350.00 to $420 (USD) (see Payment Policy) Fees in this program are nonrefundable and nontransferable

Candidates for certification who rely only on limited experience or too few/specific study materials typically do not successfully obtain certification.  Do not apply unless you feel confident that your work activities and past experience have prepared you for the examination.

Applicants already holding a certification from Software Certifications must submit a new application when deciding to pursue an additional certification. For example, an applicant already holding a CSQA certification must complete the application process again if pursuing the CSTE certification.


Code of Ethics

An applicant for certification must adhere to the Software Certifications Code of Ethics that outlines the ethical behaviors expected of all certified professionals. Software Certifications includes processes and procedures for monitoring certificant adherence to these policies. Failure to adhere to the requirements of the Code is grounds for decertification of the individual by the Software Certifications Board.


Examination

Prometric Scheduling
If you plan to take your examination at a Prometric testing center, you will schedule your appointment through Prometric's web site after first applying through Software Certifications Customer Portal and receiving a Prometric Exam Code. Candidates should allow 3 business days from the time they submit their application request before attempting to schedule an appointment at Prometric.

Note: Prometric Exams are not listed on the Examination Schedule since they can be scheduled to be taken at any time through Prometic's web site by a certification candidates after receiving theirPrometric Exam Code.


Sponsored Site Scheduling

If you plan to take your examination at a Sponsored Testing site (India, Brazil, and China only), you will schedule through the Software Certifications web site Customer Portal. You must schedule your examination at least 60 days before the selected examination date in order to reserve a seat which are limited based on availability. Candidates for certification must pass a four-part examination in order to obtain certification. The examination tests the candidate's knowledge and practice of the skill areas defined in the CSTE Body of Knowledge. Candidates who do not successfully pass the examination may retake the examination up to two times by submitting the retake application and paying all required fees. Subsequent additional examination efforts require reinitiating the entire application process.
