Category E - Self-Study
Activities designed to improve proficiency in certification skill areas as defined in the Body of Knowledge may qualify for CPE credit up to a maximum of
20 CPE credits per year, with specific limitations within each sub-category. Activities in this category are reported on the Category E Activity Reporting Form
One activity is reported per form. Qualifying activities include:
- Books: Reading recently published books on skill areas related to the Common Body of Knowledge. Selected books must have been published within the last five years of the date for which CPE credit is claimed. Up to 5 CPE hours can be claimed for each book read.
- Periodicals: Reading self-study materials related to the certification Common Body of Knowledge. Hours claimed should be for actual contact hours with the materials. Typical print materials include subscription periodicals. Up to 2 CPE hours can be claimed for each periodical read.
- Videos: Viewing self-study materials related to the certification Common Body of Knowledge. Hours claimed should be for actual contact hours with the materials.
- Internet: Reading self-study materials on the Internet related to the certification Common Body of Knowledge. Hours claimed should be for actual contact hours with the materials. This category may be used to claim web-based courses that are not formal enough to be claimed in Category A - Education. Submitted claims must be supported by documentation of sites visited.
Common reasons why claimed hours are often rejected in this category:
- Hours are claimed in excess of the 20 hours allowed per year.
- Claimed hours don't adequately address elements of the body of knowledge.
- Materials claimed were for a professional membership already claimed for CPE credits.
